How Big Maths works

Big Maths makes basic skills secure one small step at a time. Knowing the ideas behind the app helps you support your child.

CLIC. Maths is organised into four parts:

  • Counting: knowing how numbers work and fit together.
  • Learn Its: facts known instantly.
  • It's Nothing New: using what you know to solve something that looks new.
  • Calculation: ways of working out answers.

Small steps. Each skill is broken into small steps. A stumble points to the exact idea that needs another look, never to a problem with the child.

Use what you know. A known fact unlocks many more. So Big Maths builds connections rather than asking children to memorise everything.

Three kinds of practice. Practice moves through Repeat, Revisit and Real Life: the plain calculation, a new setting, then an everyday problem. See Practice.

The app notices; people teach. The app finds where a child is and gives them the right practice. Parents, carers, teachers and tutors explain new ideas.

By the way…

You don't need to know the Big Maths terms to help. Knowing that your child learns in small steps is enough.
